Hi, I’m Scott MacLeod. I’ve been to 61 countries and five continents – even lived on two of them. But you might wonder why I have a website to show you how you can have adventure and luxury and value when you travel.
There are a couple of stories that were my ephipanies on this journey, but first, a little background on how I got here. I grew up in a family that traveled little — my father was a work-a-holic, before the word existed. But I could read, and I was curious. I collected stamps, and wondered where all these places were. I was always adventurous, always looking for the next “whee” moment. So when college came around, I wanted to discover a new part of the country, to see new places, meet new people. Same thing when it came time for a career. I will never forget when my job took me to Europe for the first time — my first time off North America. The anticipation, the wonder, were real — and they have never left. So I became a traveler. But I was always a well armed traveler — I did my research, and while I knew what I wanted and how it might play out, I was always open to the journey of discovery. So, I said I’d tell you two stories, and all I’ve done is talk about me.
We were getting ready to go to Burma (aka Myanmar, depending on your politics). The outside was essentially only let in there about five years ago, so to say the tourism infrastructure is immature would be pretty much the case. I could make the hotel reservations on-line, but got nowhere on domestic air tickets (no Kayak there, yet). Plus I needed a transfer to and from the airport in Yangon. The only alternative was to use an in-country travel agent for both. The flights were fine, but they wanted $400 for a ride to the airport and back. So, I went on line, found four well recommended drivers and picked one who charged me $90, round trip.
Second story. Same trip. We met another couple who were doing basically the same thing we were doing, except they used a packaged tour, bought from an agency that specializes in such things. The husband had seen videos, and he wanted to go up country. The wife started looking at all of the pieces, but gave up because of how hard it was. Plus, their local agent was no help. After we got back, I looked at who they used, and what they charged, and was shocked to see that their trip, which was basically identical to ours, cost thousands more.
And that’s when I started this website. Because I’m not any smarter than any of you. If you found your way here, you can use the internet as well as I can. I want to show you how you don’t pay $400 for a $90 driver. How you don’t pay $2700 for something that cost us under $1000. And more important, how you have the freedom to linger as long as you like at places that deserve it, and leave places before the rest of the crowd is ready. I don’t do group tours, and I will show you how you never will again.
Think of me as your travel crash test dummy. Learn from both my mistakes, and my experiences. I’m here for you. Reach out, because I answer my e-mails, comments, and social media inquiries. I want to inspire and educate you if you are ready to get started.
